JOB SUMMARY: The Medication Tech is responsible for medication, treatments and resident care duties as assigned by the Wellness Director. This position administers medications according to physician orders and by acceptable standards. The MT engages in practices of care within the scope of the community regulation under the guidance and delegation of the Wellness Director and Corporate Nurse. They will answer and communicate the needs of the residents to the Wellness Director, family, physician and/or ancillary support. They insure that the medication area is kept clean and meeting standards of Title 22 regulations and Sterling Heights policies and procedures. They can communicate and delegate to Caregivers keeping the Wellness Director involved at all times.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

*Adheres to and conveys Oakwood Village philosophy of maintaining elements of self-care and encouraging resident independence.

* Ability to follow chain of command.

* Provide leadership and direction to other shift personnel.

* Remains calm during emergencies.

* Takes report from incoming/outgoing Med-Tech and implements necessary protocol for their shift.

* Fills out Incident Report appropriately for resident and/or personnel when incident occurs on shift.

* Audits necessary areas when instructed to do so by the Wellness Director.

* Observes and communicates to Wellness Director any changes in resident physical or mental status.

* Assists with taking monthly weights with residents as ordered and communicates changes to Wellness Director.

* Communicates as needed with physicians, families or other appropriate parties regarding resident status, changes in status, need for appointment, etc.

* Administers medications and treatments as assigned within the scope of practice.

* Pull the medications, Dot the MAR, and initials MAR when meds have been given.

* Follow the Six Rights as explained in med-aide training.

* Passes medications and staying with each resident until the medication is consumed, then charts appropriately. Documents any refusals appropriately and will communicate to Wellness Director and physician any patterns of refusals.

* Maintains accurate, complete and confidential resident medication and care records, according to established procedure. Charts any unusual incident of information on resident progress note and in the Med Tech communication log book.

* Monitors resident self-medication program of residents when ordered by the physician or assigned by Wellness Director.

* Notifies Wellness Director and/or physician immediately if observing adverse reaction of medication on resident, or awareness of medication error.

* Responsible for confirmation of medication management.

* Responsible for following 4-hour rule on Narcotics/ATB orders.

* Keep medication cart orderly, clean and appropriately stocked. Will order medication refills when indicated.

* Responsible for recording and/or restocking of medications from pharmacy after receiving proper instructions.

* Responsible for locking and storing narcotics until turned over to pharmacy.

* Assists in other care duties as designated by Wellness Director or Administration.

* Answers call lights in a timely manner (within 2 minutes).

* Assists with transfer techniques for residents requiring assistance

* Assists with serving meals to the residents in the dining rooms and in resident rooms if needed.

* Assists with clean-up following meals including but not limited to; picking up dishes, wiping down tables, cleaning floor and chairs when needed.

QUALIFICATIONS/SPECIFICATIONS:

* Must be 18 years of age or older.

* At least one year prior caregiving experience preferred.

* Enjoys working with the elderly.

* Dependable.

* Able to work varied shifts due to 24-hour operation.

* Complete and maintain current 1st Aid and CPR card.

* Able to follow directions.

* Well groomed.

* Excellent communication skills.
