JOB CLASSIFICATION: Registered Nurse

RESPONSIBLE TO: Director of Nursing

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Must be a professional registered nurse, graduated from an accredited School of Nursing.

2. Currently licensed in the state of Iowa and show proof of licensure

3. Experience in long term care preferred.

4. It is preferred that the RN participate in yearly certification in Basic Life Support.

SKILLS NEEDED:

1. Must be able to work with others in a cooperative manner.

2. Must be able to lift and assist in resident transfer or positioning 20 % of shift.

3. Must have the ability to work with frequent interruptions.

4. Must be able to organize work.

5. Must have strong communication and supervisory skills, written and oral.

6. Must have visual acuity and manual dexterity to handle instruments and equipment for supervision and documentation of resident care 80 % of shift.

7. Must be able to lift fifty (50) to sixty (60) pounds.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Registered Nurse is a professional, licensed in the state of Iowa, directly responsible to the Director of Nursing Service. He/She is responsible for the maintenance and supervision of resident care, staff coordination, scheduling, and organization as developed by the Director of Nursing Service (DON). He/She is considered to be in charge when the DON is not available.

JOB DETAIL RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Demonstrates respect for all residents by observing both the Resident Bill of Rights and Civil Rights Policies.

2. Assists DON in formulation of written policies and procedures and other services to meet the needs of each resident.

3. Assists in direction of nursing care, services, treatments, procedures, and other services to meet the needs of each resident.

4. Assists in implementation of the physician's orders.

5. Assist in assessment of each resident monthly and quarterly.

6. Assists in development of the Health Care Plan with resident, family, and other members of the Health Care Committee, defining specific problems, expected outcomes, and nursing orders, which are resident, oriented, flexible, and attainable.

7. Assist in implementation of written Health Care Plan in cooperation with other disciplines.

8. Assists in implementation of preventative and restorative nursing of the highest possible degree of function, self-care, and independence, 20% of shift.

9. Assists in maintaining flow sheets, staff assignments, treatments and medications as indicated by daily work load fluctuation and changes.

10. Provision of additional fluid intake and documentation thereof, for residents compromised and in need due to pathological processes.

11. May be required to assist residents with dietary needs, feedings or assisting with meals.

12. Recognition of acute illness and exacerbation of existing conditions, notification of physician and staff or resident care changes.

13. Maintenance of resident's records, noting on nursing progress notes and flow sheets: medication orders; changes and reactions, intake and output as indicated; tests performed and results; physician notification of incidents; and changes in residents' physical and emotional states.

14. Physician order transcription and pharmacy/staff notification.

15. Performs admission, transfer and discharge of residents.

16. Performs report or supervises CNA report at change of shift.

17. Participates in resident/family education pertaining to resident's Plan of Care.

18. Observes and carries out procedures for: safety, infection control; universal precautions and material safety data sheets.

19. Participates in fire and disaster drills.

20. Attends monthly staff and inservice meetings and workshops.

21. Maintains current CEU status for licensure in the state of Iowa.

22. Knowledgeable of residents rights and responsibilities.

23. Knowledgeable of CQI program and ongoing studies. Will participate in studies as indicated by CQI Coordinator.

24. Performs other duties as deemed necessary and appropriate by DON.

25. Performs as the charge nurse and is responsible when DON is not available.

26. Knowledgeable of restraints (chemical, physical) and policies pertinent to them.

27. Failure to perform this job to the above specifications could result in undesirable resident consequences (i.e., contractures, pressure sores, decreased mobility and quality of live) or compromised course of recovery from illness or surgery. Noncompliance may result in termination of employment.
